Jake L. Herlong III - Chief of Police

Chief Jake Herlong is a resident of Dinwiddie County. Chief Herlong received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from JTCC in 2009. Chief Herlong is a United States Army Veteran and served as an Infantry Soldier. 

Chief Herlong has been a sworn member of the Burkeville Police Department since August 2021. Chief Herlong started his law enforcement career in 2013. Chief Herlong has worked for the Crewe Police Department, Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office, and Nottoway County Sheriff’s Office. During his law enforcement career he has served as an Honor Guard member, a Dual Purpose K-9 Handler, and an FTO. 

Chief Herlong strongly believes in community engagement. Chief Herlong emphasized that “Community Policing” has and will continue to decrease crime in Burkeville. Chief Herlong stated the Burkeville Police Department is to enforce the law and serve our incredibly diverse community with Integrity, Professionalism and Pride.
